Mitt Romney Deserves To Lose
On Tuesday, September 11, 2012, Libyan militants launched an assault on the American Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
The result of this attack led to the death of the U.S. Ambassador, J.
Christopher Stevens, and 3 other Americans at the consulate. This
attack was horrendous and entirely uncalled for, but the comments made
by Mitt Romney made it even worse.
A nation comes together in a time of crisis and puts politics aside. This was not the case for the Romney campaign. Just after the attack took place, Mitt Romney issued a statement. “It’s disgraceful that the Obama administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks”.
This statement is both unfair and untrue. The White House issued no such statement sympathizing with the militants that waged the attack. It was the U.S. Embassy in Cairo that issued the following statement, “the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims — as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions”. Just to be clear, President Obama did not apologize.
It is obvious that the U.S. Embassy in Cairo was issuing this statement to try and cool down the protestors. Americans in the embassy were scared for their lives and did the most rational and diplomatic thing they could think of.
Two statements that came from the Obama Administration were from the President himself and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Secretary Clinton stated, “I condemn in the strongest terms the attack on our mission. We are heartbroken by this terrible loss. There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind.”
President Obama issued a statement, which condemned the assault, praised Stevens, and pledged “all necessary resources to support the security of our personnel in Libya, and to increase security at our diplomatic posts around the globe.”
Mitt Romney’s response was foolish, to say the least. He pretends that the statement made by the U.S. Embassy in Cairo was actually issued by the White House. Furthermore, he makes believe that it is shameful to issue such a statement in an attempt to save lives.
His reaction to the Libyan crisis demonstrates that not only does he lack that character to be president, but has no feasible strategy to defeat President Obama, as he will say anything to try and attack him, especially when it is uncalled for. At a moment when many Americans want and need nonpartisan unity, he carries on with the rhetoric that fosters a political divide amongst Americans. This is why Mitt Romney deserves to lose.
